PALESTRA A NÃO PERDER - ENTRADA LIVRE -
DIA 2 DE OUTUBRO, PELAS 15:00, NO ANFITEATRO DO ISR - Univ. Coimbra

"INTELLIGENT VEHICLES AT THE GRAND CHALLENGE: THE VISLAB EXPERIENCE"
PROF. ALBERTO BROGGI

Subject:
In this presentation it will be addressed what an intelligent vehicle is,
and some possible future scenarios will be described. A few examples
of prototypes developed at Prof. Broggi´s VisLab in Parma will be described.
Prof. Broggi will also discuss the DARPA Grand Challenge, showing results illustrated
by some videos about VISLAB vehicle (called TerraMax).

The 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge edition is a milestione since it was the first time
that unmanned vehicles suceed in such an extremely complex task.
Five autonomous vehicles reached the finish line after 130+ miles of desert,
rough terrain, and extreme conditions.
TerraMax vehicle was one of the five vehicles completing the course
of 130+ miles..

PROF. BROGGI´s SHORT CV
His main research interests are related to the application of artificial
vision techniques in automotive applications. He was the coordinator of
the ARGO Project, aimed at developing a computer vision system to the
automatic driving of a passenger car on highways and freeways. Currently
he is coordinator of projects related to the use of daytime and
infrared vision for human shape localization and pedestrian detection,
as well as obstacle, lane, and vehicle detection.

His research interests, besides real-time computer vision algorithms for
automated vehicle navigation, include low-cost architectures to be
integrated on unmanned vehicles.

The two most relevant results, which are considered as Milestones in the
robotics and image processing domain, are:

* the ``MilleMiglia in Automatico'' tour, a 2000+ km test drive of the
ARGO autonomous vehicle on italian highways in normal traffic and
weather conditions; during this test the ARGO vehicle drove for almost
95\% of the distance in automatic mode; June 1998.
* the ``DARPA Grand Challenge'' race, a 132 miles off-road race in
which the TerraMax vehicle, equipped with a vision system developed in
Broggi's Lab, reached the finish line with no human intervention.

Prof Broggi serves as Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on
Intelligent Transportation Systems since 2004.
